The Greatest Comeback in NFL History: Bills vs. Oilers

11/09/2023

It was January 3rd, 1993, and the Buffalo Bills faced off against the Houston Oilers in the AFC Wild Card Game. The Oilers had dominated the Bills in the first half, heading into halftime with a staggering 28-3 lead. Many fans had already given up hope for Buffalo, resigned to watching their team's season end in heartbreaking fashion. But what followed was nothing short of miraculous.

The Bills came out of halftime with a newfound fire, determined to turn the game around. Quarterback Frank Reich led the charge, throwing touchdown passes to Andre Reed and Don Beebe in the third quarter. But the Oilers still held a commanding 35-17 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

That's when the Bills turned up the heat even more. They scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, including two more touchdown passes from Reich to Reed. With under three minutes left in regulation, the Bills tied the game and sent it into overtime.

In OT, it was all Buffalo. They won the coin toss and drove down the field, setting up kicker Steve Christie for a game-winning field goal. The stadium erupted as the Bills completed the greatest comeback in NFL history, winning 41-38.

The game became legendary, known simply as "The Comeback." It showed that no lead is safe in the NFL and that anything can happen in the playoffs. The Bills would go on to reach the Super Bowl for a third consecutive year that season, but the memory of their wild Wild Card victory over the Oilers will always be etched in football history.  new balance 574 storm blue with sea salt, new balance 574 v
